LEGO is turning four iconic women of NASA into minifigures

Astronomer Nancy Roman, computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, and astronauts Mae Jemison and Sally Ride will all be a part of LEGO's Women of NASA set arriving in stores November 1.

The set also includes a booklet about the four featured women of NASA, the fan creator, and the professional LEGO designers who collaborated on the set.

The finalized set, revealed Wednesday, features 231 pieces, including minifigures depicting astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, astronaut/physicist Sally Ride and astronaut/engineer Mae Jemison, all of whom made huge contributions to NASA and the advancement of space exploration. Other fan-created sets that have been produced include Doctor Who and Big Bang Theory.

"In all realms of science, engineering, and technology, pioneering women have historically been underappreciated for their often groundbreaking work". However, Lego said Johnson chose not to participate. The final designs were done by Lego designers Tara Wike and Gemma Anderson.

Lego's Women of NASA range gets lift-off on November 1 and will set you back $24.99 - around £20 based on the current exchange rate, but expect it to be closer to a like-for-like currency conversion, with United Kingdom pricing set closer to the £25 mark.

The set also comes with a posable Hubble Space Telescope, a mini Space Shuttle Challenger (with removable rocket stages), a launchpad and a stack of books representing Hamilton's Apollo Guidance Computer onboard flight software source code.

Katherine Johnson, a mathematician and scientist whose story is told in the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures, was originally slated to appear in the Lego set, too.

"Weinstock tweeted on Wednesday that she's extremely proud to know the final product will help children and adults learn about some of the pioneering scientists and engineers who helped make the USA space program what it is today".
