Italian granted sick pay to care for ill dog

An Italian university employee was granted leave from her job to take care of her sick 12-year-old English setter in a decision that could pave the way for similar pet perks on the job, The New York Times reported.

She adopted Cucciola, 12, after she was found abandoned in a Rome park and took two days off to look after her as she recovered from surgery for a breast tumour and a larynx problem.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, argued that her dog is her family, and therefore deserved to be paid for the days she couldn't work.

The woman recruited the Italian Anti-Vivisection League, one of the biggest animal rights group in Europe, to help her with the case.

The academician at La Sapienza University in Rome applied for a two-day sabbatical in accordance with animal protection laws in country and won case.

"It is a significant step forward that recognised that animals that are not kept for financial gain or their working ability are effectively members of the family", Gianluca Felicetti, president of LAV, was quoted by BBC.

'Now, with the necessary veterinary certification, those in the same situation will be able to cite this important precedent'. According to her the owner of the animal is threatened by imprisonment for a year or a fine of up to 10 thousand euros.
