Indian passport ranked 75 in Global Power Index 2017

According to CNN, the top ranking for Singapore is thanks to a recent decision by Paraguay to remove visa requirements for passport holders of the Asian city-state.

The other top seven countries in the Passport Index include (in order of rank after Singapore): Germany; Sweden and South Korea are tied for third; Denmark, Finland, Italy, France, Spain, Norway, Japan, and United Kingdom are tied for fourth; Luxemburg, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, and Portugal are tied for fifth; Malaysia, Ireland, Canada, and the United States of America are tied for sixth; Austria, Greece, and New Zealand are tied for seventh.

The U.S. passport's ranking has declined since Donald Trump became president, according to the Passport Index.

There are two new security features - the image of the passport holder inside a window that can be viewed as a positive or negative portrait when tilted and viewed in transmitted light; and a surface transformation design in the shape of the national flower, which displays reflective and animation effects at different angles.

The Global Passport Power Rank is an index which ranks passports on the basis of the access it has to countries around the world on a visa-free or with visa on arrival basis.

Philippe May, managing director of Arton Capital's Singapore office, said in a statement: "For the first time ever, an Asian country has the most powerful passport in the world".

The ranking scores are based on how many countries will give visa-free access to the passport holder. It was developed by Canada-based global consultancy Arton Capital.

Meanwhile, in his address at the Asia-Pacific Geo-Economic Strategy Forum on Wednesday, Singapore's Senior Minister of State Mohamad Maliki bin Osman expressed concern over the "wave of populist nationalism" in the western countries, saying the deep-seated anger over growing income inequality and immigrations have shaped voting patterns in the West.

The worst scorers are Afghanistan at 94th spot with a visa-free score of 22, while Pakistan and Iraq are both at 93 with a score of 26. "Rather, governments must make sure that the net benefits from trade are distributed in an equitable and inclusive fashion".
