Divisional Opener a Fresh Start for New England Pats?

Not even three weeks ago, the Jets were thought to be on their way to the No. 1 pick in next year's draft, perhaps even to the second 0-16 season in National Football League history.

No, not the No. 1 draft pick — as so many predicted.

Welcome again, New York Jets fans, to Patriots Week.

-The Jets have overcome 29 penalties for 244 yards over the course of their three-game winning streak, a surprisingly high number considering the Jets were among the top-five least penalized teams during head coach Todd Bowles' first two seasons with the team. "They're a well-balanced team, make you defend everybody". They are kings of the division right now.

The X factor in this game is the Jets defense going up against a red hot Patriot offense. Muhammad Wilkerson needs to play up to his contract if the Jets want to win this game.

Still, New York recognizes it has quite a few flaws, with penalties a major issue. It got them back in the win column after a disappointing loss to the Carolina Panthers at Foxboro in Week 4. We've got a lot of work to do, so we'll kind of grind it out here this week and see where we can get to.

To their credit, most of the Jets acknowledged after Sunday's sloppy victory over the winless Browns that they'll have to play much better to have shot to beat the visiting Patriots this week.

"Some of them are ticky-tacky, some of them are legit and some of them you can question", Bowles said. He has a lot of different options, he uses them.

He even singled out defensive lineman Leonard Williams as one of the guys who could give the Patriots fits on Sunday. "But at the same time, we feel that we didn't play up to our standards that we've seen on film — speaking for my position and our defense, specifically".

Opening the season with a loss to the Buffalo Bills was one thing, but being routed by the Oakland Raiders 45-20 made it seem as if it was going to be a very long season in NY.

Josh McCown has been a big surprise for Jets fans this season. "So we have to start faster". The Patriots have outscored their opponents 148-142 on the season.

Here's what Belichick said: "Alright, well, [we're] back in the division here". "They've had three weeks in a row that they've played well. It's always tough with the Jets and we know it'll be tough this week".

One of the big playmakers on the defense - Kony Ealy - the Patriots are very familiar with as they released him during training camp this summer and then the Jets scooped him up off waivers. He has been sacked 16 times though, already one more than he suffered in the entire 2016 season. His last kick at MetLife Stadium was a 41-yard OT victor against the Jaguars in Week 4, his fifth game-winning field goal of his career. However, Kansas City is worst in that category at a net of 26.2 yards lost per game in penalties, and the Chiefs are the only undefeated team in the NFL.
