Bhandup By-election Results: BJP's Jagruti Patil Wins By

The campaign for the polls witnessed a bitter war of words among the Congress, BJP and Shiv Sena.

The municipal corporation of Nanded has been ruled by the Congress, since it came into existence two decades ago.

Counting of votes in this ward will be done twice - through EVMs as well as VVPAT machines, the election commission officials said.

Out of 81 seats, 41 seats are reserved for women candidates, 15 seats for SC candidates, 2 for ST and 22 seats for Backward Class communities.

BJP's Jagruti Patil defeated Shiv Sena's Meenakshi Patil in Bhandup, while Himali Kamble defeated Nationalist Congress Party's Dhananjay Gaikwad by margin of 4483 votes. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are also expected to play a crucial role.

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has inched closer to Shiv Sena's tally in the Mumbai civic body after its nominee won the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bypoll from Bhandup on Thursday.

The Congress, with 41 members, controls the outgoing civic body.

Congress activists celebrated in Nanded, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. Around 60% of the registered voters cast their votes on Wednesday.

Shiv Sena has managed to win 1 seat.

Nanded is the home turf of former Marharashtra chief minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan who represents the constituency in Lok Sabha. Though the BJP has supported Shiv Sena, it is not sharing the power in the city council with them.

Both the Congress and the BJP had made it a battle of prestige to wrest control of the civic body in the historical town renowned for the Hazoor Sahib Gurudwara, one of the five holy Sikh Takhts and the resting place of Guru Gobind Singh. Sharad Pawar's NCP won 10 seats, AIMIM won 11, one seat was won by an independent candidate and two more by other parties.
