AG Sessions won't disclose Trump conversations

Democratic senators plan to press Attorney General Jeff Sessions about his private communications with the president when he appears before a Senate committee Wednesday to discuss his leadership of the Justice Department. "I do not know if that would be appropriate or not, frankly", Sessions said.

Sessions said Wednesday he did not recall any discussions about the Trump campaign during his meetings with Kislyak and denied meeting with any Russian officials to discuss coordination between the campaign and Russia.

Sessions told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee during an opening statement of his oversight hearing today the president is entitled to have private conversations with Cabinet secretaries.

"Broadly speaking, do you believe that it would be problematic for an ongoing investigation if a president were to preemptively issue a pardon for someone who we have reason to believe is of interest to that investigation before the special counsel had a chance to finish his work?"

Sessions stressed at the outset that he would not discuss any private conversations with the president and he largely abided by that principle, deflecting questions not only about the Russian Federation investigation but also about the president's pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, among other topics.

In opening remarks, committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and ranking member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) told Sessions they wanted to know why the president fired Comey in the midst of investigations into whether Trump campaign officials colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential race. He will likely face questions from lawmakers about his swift undoing of Obama-era protections for gay and transgender people and his rollback of criminal justice policies that aimed to reduce the federal prison population, among other changes he has made in nine months since taking office. He said he could not waive executive privilege.

Feinstein asked Sessions his role in the firing of Comey last May. Sessions said he was asked to make a recommendation in writing and submitted it to the president. Rosenstein agreed that Comey needed to go because of his decision to talk about the email investigation of Hillary Clinton - and his defense of it in Congress. "For the first time I'm aware of in all of my experience. a major case in which DOJ prosecutors were involved in an investigation that an investigative agency announced the closure of an investigation". Sessions said he had "never heard of an investigator" declaring the closing of an investigation as Comey did, and that he was particularly concerned that Comey said he would do it again.

"I think that was a basis that called for a fresh start at the Federal Bureau of Investigation", he said.

It is standard operating policy for attorneys general to appear each year before the Justice Department's congressional overseers on the House and Senate judiciary committees.
