Xbox One X's Intelligent Delivery shrinks game sizes

Xbox One X's Intelligent Delivery shrinks game sizes

After Windows and Xbox converged into a single OS for game development, Microsoft came up with UWP application model allowing game developers to publish their games for both Windows 10 and Xbox One through Windows Store. Developers could theoretically use ID to carve up their game into "chunks" or what I like to call "modules", effectively letting gamers download or install the portions they want. For example, Japanese language support could be an optional chunk for Western users - an extra on-demand download, or placed on the secondary disc - while that data would obviously be a mandatory part of the Japan SKU. Players will be able to download only the chunks they need or want to play the game, rather than downloading the complete game with all content.

"But", you give voice your concerns, "aren't games chock-full of 4K assets going to take longer to download?" It'll mean potentially huge savings for Xbox One owners as Xbox One X games proliferate. 4K assets will only install if you're running an Xbox One X version, but Digital Foundry expanded on that info, noting that even things like different language packs will remain uninstalled to help download sizes.

Xbox Games AAA games

Mr. Leadbetter also postulates that since Intelligent Delivery effectively adds multi-disc support to the Xbox One family of consoles that developers could start shipping dual-disc games, with singleplayer campaign on one disc and online multiplayer assets on the other (think Halo 3: ODST). For example, if you have an Xbox One title on an external drive which is then plugged into an X console, the user is prompted to download the X-specific data. With this new system, only the required data would be downloaded or pushed to any Xbox system based on the current game requirements. All will be confirmed when Microsoft launches the Xbox One X this November.

It'll be fun to see what devs can do with this feature in a year or two's time. But Intelligent Delivery offers some smart tools that stand to have a big impact on storage space and download times.
