Terror probe launched after knife-wielding man attacks soldier in Paris

The soldier is reported to have tackled his attacker to the ground before he was arrested by armed police, the Independent reports.

Reports state that the man was not previously known to the police, and has been arrested.

A knife-wielding man attacked a soldier on patrol in central Paris on Friday but did not cause any injuries, police said.

The soldier was a member of Operation Sentinel, a task force assigned to protect prominent sites in the region following a recent surge in Islamic extremist attacks.

The soldier was unhurt in the incident.

"The man has been seized, which is further proof of the professionalism and efficiency of the Sentinel soldiers in this protection mission", she said. This is the seventh attack against the patrolling soldiers, Europe 1 radio reported. The suspect was arrested hours after the incident on a motorway in northern France.

The target was a soldier who was part of an anti-terror operation in which thousands of troops and police have been deployed since January 2015.

According to first elements of investigation, assailant quickly overpowered by military, would have held about referring to Allah, said a police source.

The local prosecutor's office said witnesses of the attack in a public park of the town center heard the attacker shout Allahu Akbar while hitting the women, who were taken to hospital but whose life is not in danger.

France declared a state of emergency following attacks in Paris in November 2015, in which more than 130 people were killed.
