Myanmar faces 'defining moment', must stop the violence

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has used strong language in addressing the atrocities in Myanmar, referring to it as "ethnic cleansing" and "an abomination".

"This violence must stop, this persecution must stop".

More than 400 people have been killed in Rakhine State and almost 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh, overwhelming the nation's border camps. "I think many people around the world share that admiration".

Those who arrived on Wednesday in wooden boats on beaches near Shah Porir Dwip fishing village described ongoing violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where smoke could be seen billowing from a burning village - suggesting more Rohingya homes had been set alight.

"With respect to the horrors that we are witnessing occurring in Burma, I think it is a defining moment in many ways for this new emerging democracy, although it is a power-sharing arrangement". "We appreciate the hard and complex situation Aung San Suu Kyi finds herself in".

Thant Myo Htway, one of the protestors, said "We strongly condemn the actions of ARSA Bengali extremist terrorists that damages our nation's sovereignty".

On September 8, over 300 Muslims also protested in Tokyo, Japan in front of Myanmar embassy over Rohingya affairs of which Myanmar nationals there also staged a counter-protest against it.

"Violence in Myanmar has created a humanitarian catastrophe".

A Myanmar government committee investigating the Rohingya Muslim minority in Rakhine state said adhering to the rule of law was the best means to resolve the ongoing humanitarian crisis, an statement said on Friday.

The Rohingya, described by the United Nations as among the world's most persecuted peoples, have faced heightened fears of attack since dozens were killed in communal violence in 2012.
