Motel 6 May Be Tipping Off ICE On Undocumented Guests

The publication reviewed court records between February and August, which show that in that time, ICE arrested at least 20 people at two Motels 6s (4130 North Black Canyon Highway and 1530 North 52nd Drive). "This was implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management", Motel 6 told BuzzFeed. Could one ever imagine that the immigration debate would extend to ... the front desk of Motel 6, home of the "We'll leave the light on for you" slogan?

Empowered by the Trump administration and President Donald Trump's promise to severely crack down on illegal immigration, ICE agents have ramped up efforts to arrest undocumented immigrants.

Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe, a spokesperson for ICE's Phoenix division, refused to confirm to the Phoenix New Times whether Motel 6 supplied agents with information. In June, ICE Director Thomas Homan had warned that all undocumented immigrants "need to be worried" and said that ICE would also go after non-criminal undocumented people.

While Motel 6 has not responded to direct inquiries about the arrests, employees at both locations told New Times off the record that it is standard practice to send guest information to ICE.

Multiple Motel 6 chains in heavily Latino neighborhoods around Phoenix have been tipping off ICE agents when guests check in at their locations without citizenship documents. Rocha told the Phoenix New Times.

The ACLU of Arizona criticized Motel 6 for failing to inform customers their personal information might be shared with law enforcement.

The extraordinary admission from Motel 6, which claimed that the policy was put in place locally in Arizona and has since been discontinued, has drawn widespread condemnation from civil liberties groups and has raised broader concerns about the way American corporations cooperate with law enforcement. 'Every morning at about 5 o'clock, we do the audit and we push a button and it sends it to ICE'. Its folksy radio ads seem so very welcoming - they're going to leave the light on for me!

Immigration attorney Denise Aguilar wrote The New Times in an email that some of her clients "have heard (no telling how valid the info is) that ICE is paying $200 per person for the front-desk clerk to report". "Those are investigative techniques that we wouldn't be able to talk about", O'Keefe said.

In carrying out their immigration enforcement mission, ICE deportation officers make arrests nationwide every day as part of the agency's ongoing efforts to ensure domestic security, public safety, and the integrity of our nation's borders.

Both of the Motel 6 locations are corporate owned, so this isn't the case of a local franchise owner taking people's money and then calling the authorities.
