Interstate 75 to remain open in North Florida as flooding recedes

While I-75 will remain open, high river waters have closed two other bridges.

Florida transportation officials are preparing for the likely closure today of Interstate 75 north of Gainesville as waters from the Santa Fe River are expected to continue to rise and make the road unsafe.

If the river rises over the highway, I-75 will be shut down, potentially crippling southbound traffic and leading to significant delays Thursday evening through Saturday.

Both north and southbound lanes of the interstate at the State Fe River would be closed.

As of Wednesday morning, the river level is safe at 55 feet.

McKinley Lewis, a spokesman for Gov. Rick Scott, said FDOT bridge inspectors and the U.S. Geological Survey were monitoring river levels at the bridge around the clock. FDOT will keep the public updated on closures and travelers can consult with www.FL511.com for up-to-date road information and closures.

According to the USGS, the Sante Fe River at O'Leno State Park - less than a mile to the west of I-75 - measured at 56.61 feet as of 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

In the event of road flooding on I-75 at the Santa Fe River, FDOT will reroute traffic to USA 19, US 301 and I-95.

US 27 northbound traffic to Lake City is being rerouted in High Springs and USA 27 southbound traffic to Gainesville is detouring on State Road 47 in Fort White.
