Erdogan: Trump apologized to me over brawl between Turkish bodyguards and protesters

Woodruff questioned Erdogan on the discrepancy in his account, prompting the Turkish leader to apologize.

In an interview with PBS Newshour on Tuesday, Erdoğan claimed that in a phone call with Trump this month, the president said he was "sorry" for the incident.

A congressional official said the USA state department has formally withdrawn its notification to congress of the planned sale.

"No apology", Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the Post on Wednesday.

Erdogan went on to blame the protesters and members of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) for his security physically beating the peaceful protesters.

"The protesters were insulting us, and they were screaming and shouting".

He was in town for a visit with Trump, and a group protested in Lafayette Park outside the White House. "The protesters were very close to my auto, to my vehicle".

Germany's The Linke leftist party criticized the number of approvals, saying that it was not reasonable that 196 Turkish diplomats would be granted asylum in Germany as ties between the two countries carry on as usual. "They failed to do that".

But video of the incident paints a completely different picture. The request for Congressional review of the matter was submitted on the eve of the May 16 attack in front of the Turkish Ambassador's residence in Washington, DC, videotaped live by the ANCA's Hamparian; that attack sent peaceful protesters to the hospital. "We should also stop selling weapons to units of the Turkish National Police that have been arbitrarily arresting and abusing Turkish citizens who peacefully criticize the govt".

Nine protesters were injured. They are now awaiting a legal hearing, which is scheduled for October 10.

Erdogan's recollection of the event is far from what the District of Columbia Attorney's Office said in a statement at the time, noting that the defendants "were indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, with a bias crime enhancement". Sixteen of those indicted were charged in June on criminal complaints.

Turkish-U.S. relations took an additional blow Monday as the Trump administration rescinded a deal to sell handguns and other weapons to Turkish presidential security forces, The Associated Press reported.

"I do not know that".

Erdogan, however, used it as an opportunity to bring up US funding for Syrian Kurds, which he labeled as "terrorists".
