Diego Costa 'not expected to make Chelsea return'

Atletico Madrid, who are working under the restrictions of a transfer ban, failed to put a deal in place before the La Liga transfer window closed on Friday.

Upon seeing Costa's addition to the team, Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois poked fun of Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's now-infamous "se queda" Tweet.

Chelsea want more than £50million, while Atletico are offering closer to £40m.

A long-touted move to Atletico Madrid might not have come to fruition in the summer, but the club from the Spanish capital are still seeking the forward, who is eager to return for a second stint there.

Costa was actively hunting for a way out at Chelsea after Antonio Conte informed him at the end of last season that he had no future with the champions. But the Blues insist it was decided in January, with the striker and his agent, Jorge Mendes, that Costa could leave this summer.

However, Atletico hope Costa can smooth matters over for the sake of the transfer and to salvage his personal World Cup aspirations ahead of next year's tournament in Russian Federation.

Costa has refused to train with the reserves. However, a deal was not struck by the two clubs leaving Costa a Chelsea player for at least another six months.

Then last Sunday his thumping header sealed an impressive 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge over Everton. "As the main striker I always have to be a target for my team-mates". The club have ordered him to return to training and make himself available, but he is ready to take the fine rather than return.

This four-point demand puts the club on a collision course with Conte.
