Bertrand admits Southampton pal Van Dijk wanted Liverpool move

The likes of Benedikt Höwedes and Kalidou Koulibaly had been talked about within circles of the Liverpool fanbase, however, Klopp is adamant that his current crop of players are as good as any other defenders on the market.

Klopp eventually decided against signing a new centre-back and his decision not to reinforce the defence has come in for criticism after recent mistakes at the back this season. However, the Argentine coach spoke of the unlikelihood van Dijk returns to the first team with the captain's armband in tow.

"A mistake they all made in their life?" "Now, when he's not playing, you can not put the captain on someone that is not playing, but obviously Virgil was one of the leaders of the squad". "That's how I understand life", he explained.

Fans could be forgiven for asking why Liverpool didn't try to get another centre-half when it became apparent that Southampton wouldn't sell their star.

"It is not that we ignore it - I said if there would have been a solution out there we would have done it". We want to make the right decisions.

"I believe in trust", said the 50-year-old, whose side host Burnley in the Premier League today.

Klopp said: "No. We watched all of them 500 million times". I trust people until they give me an opportunity or a possibility not to trust them anymore. You perform really well boys, credit.

"Two goals we conceded, that was not good". We perform bad, my credit.

'Oh yeah, sometimes they make bulls**t, and we are not happy.

"At the time I thought it had gone through his legs but then I watched it back".

A 19-second video of the heckling has been posted on social media, showing Henry looking somewhat uncomfortable.

On the back of their inability to strengthen at the heart of their back four, the Anfield outfit have opened the 2017-18 campaign with more disjointed performances to further highlight their major weakness. He can deal with it.
