5 steps you should take to protect yourself

Since the announcement of the cyberattack - which compromised Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, credit card numbers and addresses - Equifax shares have fallen more than 30 percent.

The Equifax hack has many people concerned and some not realizing the impact of this breach.

Many customers aren't comfortable signing up for the free credit monitoring service through Equifax, but experts say, you shouldn't be wary about giving them your personal information.

In addition, Carr said one of the first steps Georgians should take is freezing their credit, which essentially locks down a person's credit to prevent thieves from opening credit lines.

He says, "Everyone is entitled to a free credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies and you're also entitled to a free security freeze". A freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it almost impossible for someone to open a new account or line of credit in your name.

Their businesses are based on getting customer data from banks, which allows them to track things like whether you've been paying your mortgage, your credit card or auto loan.

Equifax is now offering a 30-day credit freeze. Just click enroll on the page that tells you you may be a victim. Alerts force credits to verify you're really you before extending credit.

In the wake of consumer complaints and media coverage, Equifax says this week it has updated call center support, added clarification about mandatory binding arbitration, and revamped the way it issues PIN codes to consumers placing freezes on their credit.

"After the 2015 breach of (the Office of) Personnel Management put information of government employees and members of Congress at risk, Congress passed 10 years of free credit monitoring", Brown said.

"If you are the person that is actually making the request for credit you can get that passed", he said. He also said other companies offer similar services. "We urge Iowans to take advantage of that", Greenwood said.

The massive hack of the credit reporting company Equifax has raised a lot of questions and concerns.

To see if you're a victim, you'll need your social security number, and make sure you are on a secure private computer and not on a public computer.
