Heathrow Airport records best ever month in July

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has published a report that assesses the top 30 United Kingdom airports on the quality of assistance they provide to passengers with a disability.

After the UK's 30 busiest airports were reviewed, six were rated "very good", 20 were "good" and four were "poor".

Aberdeen Airport and Sumburgh Airport on Shetland received a "good" ranking.

The report added: "Although airports can contract out the assistance service to a third party, it is important that airport management remember that the legal responsibility is still theirs, and that they must ensure that contracted providers accurately record their performance in providing the assistance service".

The airport said Middle Eastern destinations in particular were popular for travellers, as fuller aircraft led to a seven per cent rise in passengers to the area, while United Kingdom destinations also posted five per cent passenger growth after Flybe launched flights from Heathrow to Scotland earlier this year. East Midlands, Exeter, Heathrow and Manchester airports have been rated "poor" and now must all make improvements with the CAA saying it expects work to start immediately.

It added: "We will now be looking to the airport to keep this focus and ensure that current standards are maintained".

Airport operator HIAL previously said that last year's rank was down to it failing to properly publicise its work in improving accessibility. The CAA assessed airports against a number of measures to establish how well they are performing for disabled passengers. "Unfortunately, substantive issues still exist with the quality of the assistance service provided at Heathrow", said the report.

"We have been audited by the Scottish Transport Alliance and are now working with Enable Scotland on disability equality training and a local charity, Autism Initiatives, to gain a national autism awareness accreditation".

"We are already taking further steps to improve accessibility by improving our waiting area and changing over signs for our disabled toilets".

Heathrow recorded its best-ever single month in its history in July as the summer getaway sent passenger numbers soaring to record highs.

Domestic plane passengers increased 6.3% year on year while worldwide traffic rose 1.2% in the same period.

Aberdeen International Airport recorded just over 301,000 passengers in July, a year-on-year rise of 2.7%, following continued increases in both domestic and international passenger numbers.
