Facebook Introduces New 'Watch' Video Platform

New creative demands mean content owners must get savvier with storytelling, Pyne said, and she's hopeful that Facebook Watch will provide a place for users to engage with more of Quartz' video content.

Compelling shows could also encourage more people to use Facebook, especially in light of reports teen use is declining as more users migrate to Snapchat. That's why a year ago we launched the Video tab in the USA, which offered a predictable place to find videos on Facebook.

"Watch" will be available on mobile, on desktop and laptop and in our TV apps", Daniel Danker, Director of Product at Facebook wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. "We'll be introducing Watch to a limited group of people in the USA and plan to bring the experience to more people soon", Danker said.

The new platform offers an opportunity for social interactions via the Facebook community of some two billion users. It was reported then that the company spent over 100 million Dollars to fund original video content channels from celebrities, digital video creators, and media companies.

And the viral power of the compendium clip has not only drastically increased PAA's following - to the tune of an additional 1.4 million Facebook fans since the video went live last month, the company says - but it has also increased the visibility of featured creators.

He adds that he eventually sees Watch as a home to a variety of shows and original content, including reality shows, sports events, and content from regular Facebook users.

"The newsfeed, which [catered to] autoplay without sound, created this ecosystem of videos that are really different from what most video producers made before Facebook came along with their algorithm", said Solana Pyne, the executive video producer for publisher Quartz. The two companies have been communicating with each other via Facebook Messenger and G-Chat.

But Facebook faces steep competition both from publisher's owned-and-operated TV apps and from emerging video services like Hulu, YouTube TV and DirecTV Now. It admits that "we've also funded some shows" as examples.

Watch features personalized recommendations of live and recorded shows to watch, plus categories like "Most Talked About", "What's Making People Laugh" and "Shows Your Friends Are Watching".

Watchlist feature of the tab will help users to easily follow their favorite shows. Further the users can also watch the episodes and connect with friends who also follow the same show. Also, Facebook will open up the platform to a limited group of creators and will then roll it out to all soon after. "As a programmer, that's incredibly exciting especially when Facebook has said they are going to invest a lot of equity and energy into this".
