Cincinnati mother reacts to Trump's national emergency on opioids

Drug policy experts are critical of the praise that some have given President Donald Trump following his announcement Thursday that he would classify the opioid epidemic a national emergency. The governors of Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Maryland and Virginia have issued some form of emergency declaration on opioids in their states.

Public Health Nurse Lisa Roberts, with the Portsmouth, Ohio, Health Department, said she believes a national emergency declaration could increase relief for rural areas struggling to keep up with the crisis.

A recent report from the Christie-led commission equated the 142 deaths each day from drug overdoses to the death toll of "September 11th every three weeks".

ITV News has been speaking to some of those affected by the national epidemic, from addicts to coroners and police chiefs.

On August 2, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a dozen federal prosecutors will be sent to cities ravaged by the opioid epidemic to investigate health care fraud and opioid scams fueling the drug abuse epidemic. He reiterated this point from his "working vacation" just days ago: "The best way to prevent drug addiction and overdose is to prevent people from abusing drugs in the first place". He said his administration was "drawing up documents" and he was "officially" declaring it an emergency, but his administration has yet to release details as to what that statement means.

Price said other national emergencies for public health have been focused on a "time-limited problem, either an infectious disease or a specific threat to public health".

Protests outside a shareholders meeting of pharmaceutical company McKesson. Let's put it this way: More Americans died from drug overdoses in 2016 alone than in the entire Vietnam War.

The current U.S. addiction epidemic cuts across class boundaries, with many middle class people among those affected. "His announcement is another step in the effort to battle this most hard crisis". "If they do start, it's awfully tough to get off", he said, according to a CNN report.

Every year, for the last four years, 30 people in the county have died from an opioid overdose.

"Additional resources from the federal government will help hard-hit states like OH", said DeWine. In March, Christie said he had spoken to Trump about the opioid crisis "many times" and revealed that Trump was "very concerned about it".

The money from Scott's declaration will mostly be funneled into paying for medication-related treatment for substances like Suboxone and Vivitrol, which are used to help wean addicts off of opioids. In 2015, more than 52,000 people died of drug overdoses, a lot of them because of opioids. "We must continue to fully fund important programs on prevention, treatment and recovery".
