Bolt leads Jamaica home in penultimate race

ON a very rare occasion in sports history, the bronze medalist received much more cheers and applause than the victor.

Justin Gatlin avenged his second place finish to Bolt in five successive World Championships and Olympics finals by clinching the gold in a dramatic race on Saturday but Coe said that result will have no bearing on the Jamaican bowing out as the greatest sprinter of all time.

For me the whole event has been overshadowed by controversy, particularly over the drugs issue - a problem that's gone on for so many years now. The Ethiopian himself said that Farah needs to get the world record to achieve immortality. The 60,000 plus spectators jeered Gatlin whilst chanting bronze medal victor Bolt's name as if he were the champion.

But this should take nothing away from Farah's success particularly at a time when distance running is arguably more competitive than ever before. At least that's the line runners tell each other: "I am only running against myself". I did it for the fans. Meanwhile, Bolt, flamboyant in winning but gracious in defeat, congratulated his longtime foe.

"It doesn't change anything, for me". I completely lost my race plan. No regrets, I came out and did my best; win lose or draw.

"I've been back in the sport since 2010".

Yet while they promise they still have more to give, Philip insists the bumper home crowd made their job that little bit easier.

"I can't be a sore loser; throughout my career I've dominated".

American sprinter, Justin Gatlin, has accused the media of sensationalizing his rivalry with 8-time Olympic champion, Usain Bolt. It would mean the world to me but at the same time I don't take it for granted.

Maybe so, but when he asks the crowd where Bolt is, in between booing, they'll say 'he's behind you.' Two places behind you.

If you read about Bolt's rise to prominence from his early days playing in the streets and primary school playground in Sherwood Content, you would learn that he has always stood out among his peers as physically superior.

He is untouchable in the Olympics and the World Championship.

We know without a doubt his talent is unmatched, but there is something else that makes him special.

Bolt has won the affection of so many not just with his feats but also a charismatic personality.

"We do want athletes with personality".

A distraught Bolt was consoled on the ground by his sprint team-mates and he limped out of the stadium, not the way he probably envisaged his send-off going. Bolt is not the one that was crushing everything in its path with chronos from elsewhere, but this outcome was finally like a relief to an athlete who has dedicated his life to his sport from a very young age.
